PAP takes part in the second international forum on “Development of Parliamentarism”

The Rt. Hon. Roger Nkodo DANG represented the Pan-African Parliament at the second International Forum on the Development of Parliamentarism held in Moscow, Russia from 1 to 3 July 2019. The opening ceremony of this global parliamentary event was graced by the President of the Duma, the President of the Federal Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs.

The forum was also attended by Hon. Barbra RWODZI, a member of the Permanent Committee on Audit and Public Accounts, who actively participated in debates in various roundtables.

Several engagements were held on topics covering: International security: dialogue legislators for peace and stability; Law-making and legal framework for the digital future challenges and solutions; Inter-parliamentary cooperation: principles, trends, institutions as well as International humanitarian law and humanitarian cooperation: the role of parliaments and inter-parliamentary institutions.

In his interventions, the President of the Pan-African Parliament, the Rt. Hon. Roger Nkodo DANG spoke of the importance the PAP attaches to inter-parliamentary cooperation as a cornerstone of the relations between the Parliamentary institutions. He emphasized that these are important in tackling issues such as migration, climate change and strengthening of democracy.

The President further noted that within the pan-African institutions, the principle of representation was well applied, underscoring that "indeed, balance is important in political matters, in both the opposition and the ruling party, as well as gender and youth.”

He also said that parliaments should refrain from any interference in the internal affairs of States, with due respect for democratic principles and freedom of expression.

On the margins of the forum, the President of PAP met with the Right Honorable Dr. Al Qubaisi, Speaker of the Federal Council of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and handed over the Resolution granting Observer Status to the Federal Council of the UAE, which was adopted during the PAP May 2019 Plenary Session.
