The Pan-African Parliament is saddened by the passing of H.E Pierre Nkurunziza

The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) has learnt with profound shock and sorrow of the death of H.E Pierre Nkurunziza, President of the Republic of Burundi.

The continental Parliament, through the Bureau, extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late president, the Government and the people of Burundi during this time of loss. Thoughts and prayers are also with the Burundian PAP delegation and the East African Regional Caucus.

The passing away of President Nkurunziza is a great loss for Burundi. His spirited leadership in promoting the interests of Burundians was critical in paving the way for a new dawn in Burundi with the recent election of H.E Evariste Ndayishimiye.

The Pan-African Parliament reaffirms its solidarity with the people of Burundi and expresses its readiness to accompany the upcoming leadership in its cooperation with the African Union on the promotion of peace.

President Nkurunziza was also a staunch advocate for reconciliation in Burundi and was recognized for his endeavour through several awards including Prix pour la Paix; awarded to him by Accord in Durban in June 2006. May his soul rest in peace!

Hon. Bouras DJAMEL
